BACKGROUND
Kiteka was, in February 2017, a start-up designed to empower women in Sub-Saharan Africa by providing them with digital technology, originally just with mobile phones. The original name 100 Phones was notably an English construct and lacked the right kind of appeal for a name originating in Uganda.
PROJECT
Appella was delighted to provide linguistic validation for this project using Electric Eel to validate globally in 110 languages with specific attention to North, East and West Africa. This included the central African languages of Akan, Amharic, Arabic (two variants), Dholuo, Fulfulde, Gikuyu, Hausa, Igbo, Koongo, Oromo, Somali, Sukuma and Swahili. Possible issues in Amharic, Gikuyu and Swahili were flagged but outweighed by their relatively low-level relevance and other commercial imperatives.
